| Steel Hippie Shoes |
Steel Hippie Shoes - "SUMMER OF LOVE" Time to Complete:
47 hours Shoes: Size 7 (approx.), 5 inch heel tapering down to 2 inches. Material used
was a combination of 14 ga., 16 ga., and 20 ga., sheet steel for the shoes. 1/8" steel rod was used for the buckles. Flowers: 16 ga. forged steel for the daisies and for the leaves. All welded
construction with a bronze steel patina finish followed by a clear coat. Weight: Approx. 15 pounds. 10/22/08 Below are detail photos.
BELOW is one of my favorite pieces! It
is entitled "BRUJA de ACERO" which means Witch of Steel. I was inspired to make a witch hat after seeing Harry Potter
and also was inspired by one of my fellow blacksmith artists, Elizabeth Brim. It is a full size hat that is completely
made of steel. The construction is all welded and hammer or hand formed. There is a lace overlay on the cone of
the hat.

| STEEL WITCH HAT |
Height from bottom of base to top of
hat: 24 inches Width from brim edges: 19-1/2 inches Hat opening: 10 inches diameter Base:
19 inches x 12 inches Weight: 30 pounds
The flowers on the hat are Mohave desert "ghost"
flowers (Mohavea confertiflora). They are hand formed copper with forged steel stems. The base is made of
gnarly branches going up inside the hat to stay with the "witchy" theme and the tendrils are coming down to
secure the hat to the base without being obvious.

BELOW you can see that the hat has an actual
band on the inside like a real hat and the edge of the brim is "hemmed." The color of the hat is faux
painted to look like worn leather. I really tried hard to simulate the appearance of a real hat as best as I could.
